珍珠巖是一種無毒、無味、不燃、不腐、耐酸堿、保溫隔熱、內呈蜂窩狀結構產品，是有酸性火山玻璃質熔巖（珍珠巖）經破碎，篩分至一定顆粒，再經預熱，在1400℃以上高溫延時燒結而成的一種白色或淺色的優(yōu)質絕熱保溫材料。它經急劇冷卻而成的玻璃質巖石，因其具有珍珠裂隙結構而得名。珍珠巖礦包括珍珠巖，黑曜巖和松脂巖。三者的區(qū)別在于珍珠巖具有因冷凝作用形成的圓弧形裂紋，稱珍珠巖結構，含水量2~6%；松脂巖具有獨特的松脂光澤，含水量6~10%；黑曜巖具有玻璃光澤與貝殼狀斷口，含水量一般小于2%。

珍珠巖主要用于建筑物屋面及墻體的保溫、隔熱；建筑材料的輕質骨料；各種工業(yè)設備、管道絕熱層；各種深冷、冷庫工程的內壁；農業(yè)及園藝的無圖栽培、改良土壤，保水保肥等，被廣泛應用于石油、化工、電力、建筑、冶金等行業(yè)。
